时下，改革开放的富民政策如春风化雨，使一部分企业和个人走上了富裕大道。但富裕之后，人们是否都像丰田公司那样"富了不忘节俭"呢?笔者曾多次路见躺在路上的一分硬币，但熙来攘往的行人连眨一下眼睛都不愿意，任凭脚踏车碾。"捡到一分钱"交给警察叔叔的童谣已成绝唱。这里有个真实的例子。某地有一造纸厂，原是个较为景气的小厂。但自从来了个颇具"开拓"精神的厂长之后，该厂很快破了产。原因正是铺张奢侈。三天一小宴，七天一大宴，厂长出差一趟深圳，回来报销万元。"回扣"落进私人腰包，肥了个人，损了众人。长此以往，这样的企业怎不败落?最终，工人只能拿基本工资的30％，回家待业。时下操办红白喜事的规模，愈演愈烈，不请上几十桌，不花上几千几万的，绝不会收兵。
实事求是的说，我们并不富裕，不少地区仍笼罩着贫困的阴影，可是，有些地方，越是贫困越奢侈铺张。据《文摘周刊》载：A县是贫困县之一，国家每年拨给2000万元的扶贫款，中国人民银行还提供好几百万元的优惠贷款。在这个人口不到27万的山区县，仅扶贫款就年人均75元以上。可就是这个县，它去年的财政支出比人口50万的邻县还多200万元。人们在该县政府会议室里看到的情景也令人吃惊：地面铺着猩红色豪华地毯，茶几上摆着全套高档玻璃钢茶具，紧靠高级贴墙纸排着一溜高级沙发，还摆有塑料花。这里根本找不出一点贫困的影子，倒反让丰田公司自惭形秽。贫困，仍念念追求奢侈，这是一种悲哀。想想丰田精神，看看今日自己，不知有何感想?

Is Thrift Still a Good Virtue? With the improvement of the living standards, many people are no longer interested in the simple life style and some of them even feel ashamed to be thrifty. What they pursue is the latest fashion. In their eyes, thrift is already out of style. However, still other people insist that thrift is a good virtue. They say that the strong power of proction doesn’t mean that we are supposed to a live a luxurious life, because our natural resources are limited and some of them even are on the decline. Moreover, they hold that waste may lead to degradation of social atmosphere and environmental pollution as well. As to me, I prefer the latter opinion. I believe “Waste not, want not.” The truth of this saying is not to give up comfort but to enhance efficiency. In fact, economic growth depends enormously on saving. Besides, there are still millions of Chinese living under poverty line. We can never afford reckless waste. Therefore, it is no doubt that thrift is still a good virtue that we should not give up.
