现代的英语教学强调的是学生的沟通能力,特别在口语方面,因为新一代多媒体和互联网的技术的普及,使得一些好的教学方法、学习方法都能得到实现。想说一口流利的英语,最有效的学习方法是透过整句的练习。正确掌握音调变化和节奏之后,你说的英语才能被人正确理解。只掌握单词的准确发音,而没有整句练习,是练不出口语技能的。
音调变化(intonation)
英语是个像音乐的语言,有高高低低的音调(pitch)变化。最基本的音调变化规律是高、低(比前面音节低点)、低(比前面音节再低点)、低(比前面音节再低点)、低(比前面音节再低点);高、低(比前面音节低点)、低(比前面音节再低点)、低(比前面音节再低点)、低(比前面音节再低点)。。。高音调的音节总是落在重要的内容字上。
例:i DON’T want you to GO because it’s Not safe there.
节奏(rhythm)
英语是个stress-timed 的语言,有别于 syllable-timed 的语言。这里的 timed 指的是计时(timing)、节奏(rhythm)的意思。也就是说英语的节奏是根据句子重音(sentence stress,即音调提高的音节)来控制的。syllable-timed 的语言,如汉语,日语,西班牙语,节奏则决定于音节。汉语的每个字就是一个音节,说话的时候是一个字一个字迸,也就形成的汉语的节奏特征。
像音乐一样,英语一句话里,有一段一段的小节(measure)。小节在音乐里一般有固定的长度,英语口语的小节也类似,虽然长度不一定一成不变,但明显的有很强的节奏感。英语口语里,每个小节的起点是音调最高的那个音节(上面例句全大写的音节)。
一段口语句子的时间长短主要取决于有多少个含句子重音的音节,而不是有多少音节。
A: a BIG BLUE BIRD. 3个重音音节(小节)。 一共4个音节,但 时间长。
B: a BEAUtiful DOG. 2个重音音节(小节)。 一共5个音节,但时间短。
英语口语里,说话的人会把小节打头的句子重音的音节清清楚楚的发好音,至于小节内其他的音节则是想办法把他们一气呵成,在一定的时间段内,把它们说出来,赶到下一个重音音节,以便达到一个好的节奏感。在这个“赶路”过程中,便自然发展出了一些连读、略读、弱读的现象(linking)。
音节之间的连接(linking)
说英语的时候,不是一个字一个字的说,而是把整句从头到尾一个一个的音节很流畅的发出音来。底下的例句第一句是书写的英文,同样的句子,口语说起来就像第二个句子(句子里的空格只是方便各位看,其实说话的时候是没有间断的)。

英语的另外一个特点是,英语里的音节多数是封闭音节(closed-syllabled),也就是音节结尾经常是被辅音封起来的,不像syllable-timed 的语言,它的音节结尾基本是敞开的,没有被辅音封起来(open-syllabled)。这个区别给部分国人带来一些问题,他们会习惯地把音节打开,不知不觉地把元音加到英文音节后:
原句:I want to buy a red dress.
错误说法:I wanta to buy a reda dressa.
正确说法:I wan to buy a re dress.
连读(liaison)
辅音后接元音: when is Frank coming? whenis
这种辅音和元音的连读是英语母语国人比较适应的的规律,他们不太习惯元音与元音(“敞开音节”open-syllabled)的连读。各位可能在语法里学过an apple,不是 a apple,正是因为两个a 之间如果没有辅音,说起来不顺。这个对我们说“敞开音节”语言长大的人来说,一点问题都没有,也或许不理解他们为什么不习惯。元音与元音之间的连读,除非你停顿一下,后面的元音很容易把前面的元音吃掉,a apple 就成了 apple。但是你如果你为了分开两个音节而明显停顿的话,就会破坏音节与音节之间的流畅。解决办法就是加个辅音在中间。
略读(rection)
省略音: give me >> gimme let me >> lemme would have >> wouldav
kind of >> kinda
(open juncture)
后接辅音和前一音节结尾辅音相同时,省略前一音节辅音。
例:red dress >> re dress hot tea >> ho tea
缩读(contraction)
代名词加动词: We will >> we’ll we have >> we’ve
弱读(schwa)
元音(不是句子重音的)变成ə,或是干脆就不见了。
例:Please tell him I’m not coming tomorrow. te ləm
同化(assimilation)
某些辅音(stop consonants)受到后接辅音的影响而有所改变,从无声(p, t, k, voiceless)变成有声(b, d, g, voiced),但是不发出声,只需轻轻一顿,接着继续发后续音节。
例:We met at the station. ad the
He doesn’t look good today. loog good
注意
我想强调一下,音节之间的连接规律的教学,不应该让学生以为这些规律是一成不变的死规则,不能告诉学生必须死死的套用。我要说的是,连读、略读、弱读的现象是在节奏的影响下发生的。如果你一味的死用规律,在不该用连读、略读、弱读的时候去用它,会产生错误的句子节奏,使你的句子听起来的意思和你要说的意思有出入。
换言之,说话的时候,你要沟通的意思是最重要的。它决定了你选择的“内容字”,在你说话的时候,会提高这些内容字的音调,形成你句子里的一个一个小节。然后为了把握小节小节之间的节奏,你才去连读、略读、弱读这些小节内的音节。
