When people are enjoying this historical success, is it necessary for us to take some consideration to the negative impact to our society of this game. Now I want to express my view to the Olympic game here.
First, as I know we spent at least 300 billion RMB in the game include construction cost, player’ training cost. May be some students here have no idea about how much is 300 billion RMB. So I tell you it is as much as the whole cost of the Three Gorges Project. So I think it is all consuming (money and time) for our country to hold the Olympic game. We can not deny the truth that the government of a developing country spent so much money to hold a sport game for politic purpose or leader’s preference is unforgivable.
Second, holding the Olympic game brings a lot of inconvenience to our people. For instance, people want to have a travel or have some business in Beijing will be rigorous rummaged in every station they passed by. If there is wine as explosive material or tinder in your baggage, ok, enjoy your custody time for several days. Cops in the street will ask you to show the ID card to them at anytime in Beijing, if you can’t, you will also in big trouble. Although many people are very angry about such kind of policies, but the only way they can do is trying to accept those policies and pretend to be happy about all of this.
I think even if we strongly need a security and harmonious society to hold this game; we still need pay more attention to people’s rights and daylilies. Benjamin Franklin once said: “Any society which gives up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.” Our government should also take this as its principle when manage the public affairs. But ring the 2008 we clear know that the activity of the management of our government goes far away to this principle. The harmonious of our society is not the absence of the conflicts but the presence of the justice.
Ok that is my opinion to the Olympic 2008. Maybe there is a little radical, but the democracy of a society means different ideas can be expressed even though it’s wrong.

At the same time, better infrastructure, cleaner environment, enjoying the spectacular game with hundreds of sports elites and entertainment stars, and the opportunity of contacting people from all over the world also seem exciting to the citizens. Besides, the bidding will definitely promote the patriotic emotion and pride, as well as the moral behavior in local people. In most cases, bidding for the Olympics is well supported by both the public and the central government.
Unfortunately, this is not the entire view of the pretty picture. If looking from another angle, the Olympic bid might bring about some side-effects to a city.
First of all, the environmental impacts, including the increasing exhaust fumes of cars, more pressure on water resources, huge amount of wasted leaflets and other materials used for public activities, are most probably neglected. In order to broaden the streets, some trees may have to be cut. Near the construction site, the tiny st may linger in the air for a long time. These environmental consequences can be especially serious in a resource-limited and densely-populated city in a third-world country.
Besides, if talking about the economic benefit, it should not be forgotten that a quick boosting may lead to bubble growth, which may easily crash. If not well managed and organized, the big event may not be so ofitable, and the new facilities may be forever empty after the games. Yes, there have been cases that host cities ended up with enormous debts.
Finally, let’s think about the low-income groups in the city. What will they get from the Olympics bidding? More tax, more fees, more expensive property prices, and higher cost of living. These definitely are not good news for them.
To bid or not to, this is a question. It is up to the choice of the municipal government, and the local public. After the decision, what they can do is to make the most of the benefit, and rece the drawbacks to the least.
