街上是人山人海，可惜热心肠的不多。几经碰灰，终于觅到了一家书店，遂进。
“老板，有没有卖啥三啥经的？”阿长一边寻看着书架，一边探问道。
“这里有《诗经》《佛经》《财经》《三字经》等等，不知你指的是哪本？”伙计笑道。
“哦，你把那本《三字经》拿来我看看。”阿长满怀希望，接过伙计递过来的书，大略一翻，并没有什么哥儿所说的鬼呀魂呀之类的插图，不觉有点失落。
“请问有没有那种插图的《三字经》？”阿长递回了书，又朝书架扫了几眼。

阿长仰起头想了片刻。
“好像是什么鬼呀魂呀之类奇怪的东西。”
“你说的不会是《聊斋志异》吧！”店伙计有点不耐烦，掂起掸子四处拍了拍。

“没有。”伙计板起了面孔，不听她多一句话，便下了逐客令。
阿长挺委屈地走出店门，四下望了望，失望地往回走。
“怎么办，怎么办？”
她暗自思忖着，不觉踱到了一个书摊前，眼前一亮。
“有没有画着奇怪动物的三什么经？”阿长俯下身子。
“有啊有啊！呃……瞧！”小贩兴奋地从书堆中淘出了四个小本，掂着一角在空中晃了晃。
阿长拿过一个小本，翻开来直起身子，忽而十分欢喜的样子。
小贩看了她一眼，乐呵呵地说：“这真是一本好书，小时候不知翻了多少遍了，上面还有?身人面像呢！四本《山海经》，八十文。”
阿长想都没想，数出了八十文递给他，接过那四本小书，用布包好，飞也似地跑去叫哥儿去了。
