Last week, when I was walking in the street, a little goldfish was jumping on the ground dying without water. I was very sad about the little life. Immediately I bought a bottle of water and put the gold fish in. so, I have a little fish as a pet. Today, I’ like to talk something about pets. My speech can be divided into three parts. The first one is the definition of pets; the second one is the varieties of pets; the last part explains why people raise pets.
1. What’s a pet?
Almost every family has a dog or a cat as a pet. If we were not forbidden to adopt animals in our dormitory, I guess most of the girls may have a pet in the school.
Pets are animals and plants which people raise not for economical purposes but for spiritual purposes.
International Fund for Animal Welfare says that some animals like dogs and cats have been away from the natural food chain after a long evolution. They no longer exist in the ecological balance, and become more suitable to be fed by families.
2. The varieties of pets
A. animals
Monkeys, snakes and even wolves could find a home with some families. More common pets include fish, mice and birds. But the all-time favorites are cats and dogs.
B. plants
Traditionally, pets are animals which people can take pleasure in, which can accompany people. But nowadays pets are not only animals, but also plants which people take care of everyday, such as mini potted-plants, magic beams, flowers and so on. People could take these pet plants along all the time, or leave them in the house and office.
C. electronic pets
Further more, there are more and more artificial pets like QQ pets which is an electronic desktop game proced by tencent. Besides, we all know the Happy Farm (Kaixin Farm), which is some kind of electronic pets.
3. Why people raise pets?
It’s observed that people can gain lots of benefits from our pets.
A. Make people forget about loneliness. Pets are always together with their owners, and never betray them. That is to say, pets are the honest friends of human, and they are always here when people need them.
B. Increase the happiness. To the owners, pets are not just property, but a part of the family. There are special food, beds and hospitals for them; they even can have their own birthday party. After all, they are “persons”, too. People enjoy being together with these special family members.
C. Make people more friendly. Pets give their owners an appearance of friendliness. When something unhappy happened to people, pets would be a great listener. Along with pets, people seem not to complain as much as before.
D. Improve the social ability. In many cases, having a pet prepares a young couple for the responsibilities of parenthood. Pets even encourage social relationships: they provide a good topic of conversation

Some people even prefer pets to other people. Pets are not as demanding as people sometimes are. In particular,pets do not demand of us that we should talk when we wish to remain silent. Some people do talk to pets as if they were human beings, but they have the satisfaction of knowing that the
pets cannot answer back and engage them in argument. Pets seem content with so very little.

Keeping pets is a personal habit, but you can’t annoy others by your habit. If you keep your pets without annoying people, you are great. But if you don’t, don’t do that any longer. That will make your neighbors dislike you.
