About a million and a half years ago, primitive man took one stone and used it to shape another piece of stone to make a hand-axe. It was a simple tool but it was the first piece of advanced technology in the world. Since then, technology has propelled the world forward inexorably. Looking back at history and the way people used to live, there is no denying that technology has vastly improved our quality of life. In the ancient world, major inventions like the wheel and paper were responsible for nothing compared to the advancements in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. During this period, technology advanced by leaps and bounds. Electricity was discovered, which opened up a whole new world of possibilities. There were momentous improvements in transportation with the invention of the steam engine, railroads and the steamship. Lastly but most significantly improving our daily lives was the invention of the internal combustion engine, which led to the birth of the modern automobile. The period also saw huge headway in communications with the development of the telephone and radio. Wireless telegraph also become a standard safety device on oceangoing vessels. In addition, new sewage treatment systems, the flush toilet, improved ways of treating drinking water, the refrigerator, the air conditioner, television and other modern conveniences served to improve our lives considerably. The second half of the twentieth century was a period of even more wondrous technological breakthroughs. Firstly, the commercial jetliner enabled people to trave from one side of the world to the other in less than twenty-four hours. This made it easier for people from different continents and cultures to know one another, promoting greater understanding and benefiting trade among nations. The mobile phone also mad it extremely convenient for people to communicate with one another. This personal communication device is fast becoming something that we cannot live without. However, the most paramount invention that bettered our lives was the computer, coupled with te internet. We now have access to vast sources of information at the click of our mouse and we no longer have to go the the library to comb through reference books for hours. We stay in touch instantaneously with friends and families via instant messaging, e-mail and video conferencing. The web camera has allowed mothers to keep an eye on their babies while working or cooking in the kitchen.
