Lesson38 Everything except the weather 惟獨沒有考慮到天氣
My old friend, Harrison, had lived in the Mediterranean for many years before he returned to England. He had often dreamed of retiring in England and had planned to settle down in the country. He had no sooner returned than he bought a fine house and went to live there. Almost immediately he began to complain about the weather, for even though it was still summer, it rained continually and it was often bitterly cold. After so many years of sunshine, Harrison got a shock. He acted as if he had never lived in England before. In the end, it was more than he could bear. He had hardly had time to settle down when he sold the house and left the country. The dream he had had for so many years ended there. Harrison had thought of everything except the weather.
我的老朋友哈里森在回到英國以前曾多年居住在地中海地區。過去他常幻想退休後到英國，並計劃在鄉間安頓下來。他剛一回到英國便買下了一幢房子住了進去。但緊接著他就開始抱怨那裡的天氣了。因為即使那時仍為夏季，但雨總是下個不停，而且常常冷得厲害。在陽光下生活了那麼多年的哈里森對此感到驚奇。他的舉動就好像他從未在英國生活過一樣。最後，他再也忍受不住，還沒等安頓下來就賣掉了房子，離開了這個國家。他多年來的幻想從此破滅。哈里森把每件事情都考慮到了，唯獨沒想到天氣。
Lesson39 Am I all right? 我是否痊癒？
While John Gilbert was in hospital, he asked his doctor to tell him whether his operation had been successful, but the doctor refused to do so. The following day, the patient asked for a bedside telephone. When he was alone, he telephoned the hospital exchange and asked for Doctor Millington. When the doctor answered the phone, Mr Gilbert said he was inquiring about a certain patient, a Mr John Gilbert. He asked if Mr Gilbert's operation had been successful and the doctor told him that it had been. He then asked when Mr Gilbert would be allowed to go home and the doctor told him that he would have to stay in hospital for another two weeks. Then Dr Millington asked the caller if he was a relative of the patient.' No,' the patient answered,' I am Mr John Gilbert.'
當約翰.吉爾伯特住院的時候，他問醫生他的手術是否成功，但醫生拒絕告訴他。第二天，這位病人要了一部床頭電話。當房裡只剩他一個人時，他掛通了醫院的交換台，要求與米靈頓醫生講話。當這位醫生接過電話時，吉爾伯特先生說他想詢問一個病人的情況，是一位名叫約翰.吉爾伯特的先生。他問吉爾伯特先生的手術中否成功，醫生告訴他手術很成功。然後他又問吉爾伯特先生什麼時候可以回家，醫生說他在醫院還必須再住上兩個星期。之後，米靈頓醫生問打電話的人是否是病人的親屬。「不是，」病人回答說，「我就是約翰.吉爾伯特先生。」
Lesson40 Food and talk 進餐與交談
Last week at a dinner-party, the hostess asked me to sit next to Mrs Rumbold. Mrs Rumbold was a large, unsmiling lady in a tight black dress. She did not even look up when I took my seat beside her. Her eyes were fixed on her plate and in a short time, she was busy eating. I tried to make conversation.
' A new play is coming to" The Globe" soon,' I said. 'Will you be seeing it ?' ' No,' she answered. 'Will you be spending your holidays abroad this year ?' I asked. ' No,' she answered.
' Will you be staying in England?' I asked. ' No,' she answered.
In despair, I asked her whether she was enjoying her dinner.
' Young man,' she answered,' if you ate more and talked less, we would both enjoy our dinner !'
在上星期的一次宴會上，女主人安排我坐在蘭伯爾德夫人的身旁。蘭伯爾德夫人是一位身材高大、表情嚴肅的女人，穿一件緊身的黑衣服。當我在她身旁坐下來的時候，她甚至連頭都沒有抬一下。她的眼睛盯著自己的盤子，不一會兒就忙著吃起來了。我試圖找個話題和她聊聊。
「一出新劇要來『環球劇場』上演了，」我說，「您去看嗎？」
「不，」她回答。
「您今年去國外度假嗎？」我又問。
「不，」她回答。
「您就呆在英國嗎？」我問。
「不，」她回答。
失望之中我問她飯是否吃得滿意。
「年輕人，」她回答說，「如果你多吃點，少說點，我們兩個都會吃得好的！」
