可如今，科學家發現給歐洲冬季帶來溫暖的大西洋洋流流速正在減慢。11月30日，英國南安普敦國家海洋學中心科學家哈里·布萊登在《科學》雜志上發表了自己的研究成果：2004年，由他領導的研究小組在巴哈馬群島和加那利群島間沿北緯25度進行取樣調查，檢測水的鹽分和密度。並把檢測數據與1957年、1981年、1992年和1998年的記錄進行了比較，結果發現，自1957年來，深海的冷水迴流速度顯著地下降了，尤其是自1992年以來下降速度更快，如今，北大西洋暖流的流速已經比50年前下降了31％。

據英國氣象辦公室哈德利中心的科學家說，大西洋洋流發生變化的原因是由於人類導致的溫室效應讓流向大西洋的淡水量增加。全球氣候變暖，導致格陵蘭島的冰蓋和北極的冰雪融化速度加快，大量的淡水注入北大西洋。而水的下沉速度與含鹽量和密度有關，鹽分多密度大，水的下沉速度就快。淡水比含有鹽分的海水要輕而且密度也低，即使是冷水也不會沉得太深，所以在北大西洋中融化的冰水下沉速度急劇下降，大量淡水積聚在洋面上，導致從大西洋環流中分出的那股洋流缺乏向北運動的動力，速度減慢，甚至最終會停止。
