其實毒品並非是「毒性葯品」的簡稱。它是指出於非醫療目的而反復連續使用能夠產生依賴性（即成癮性）的葯品。從自然屬性來講，這類物質在嚴格管理條件下合理使用具有臨床治療價值，也就是說，在正常使用下，它並非毒品，而是葯品。不過，從社會屬性來講，如果為非正常需要而強迫性覓求，從而這類物質失去了葯品的本性，這時的葯品就成為了毒品。因此毒品是一個相對的概念。當然也有些物質成癮性大，早已淘汰出葯品范圍，只視為毒品，例如海洛因。
吸毒——這一丑惡現象乘著我國改革開放之機，肆無忌憚闖了進來，帶來的危害真是數也數不清！主要對人體與身心的危害在於毒品作用於人體，使其體能產生改變，形成在葯物作用下的新的平衡狀態。一旦停掉葯物，生理功能就會發生紊亂，出現戒斷反應，使人感到痛苦萬分。許多吸毒者在沒有經濟來源購毒、吸毒的情況下，或死於嚴重的身體戒斷反應引起的各種病發症，或由於痛苦難忍而自殺身亡。所以這種戒斷反應的痛苦，反過來又促使吸毒者為避免這種痛苦而千方百計地維持吸毒狀態。也有很多人忍受不了這種強烈的痛苦而不斷加大劑量，使吸毒者終日離不開毒品。而毒品進入人體後又作用於人的神經系統，出現精神依賴性，並導致幻覺和思維障礙等一系列的精神障礙。使吸毒者出現一種渴求用葯的強烈慾望，驅使吸毒者不顧一切地尋求和使用毒品，甚至為吸毒而喪失人性！！吸毒不僅對人體與身心有一定的危害作用，還帶給社會與家庭不少的傷痛。家庭中一旦出現了吸毒者，家便不成家了。吸毒者在自我毀滅的同時，也破害自己的家庭，使家庭陷入經濟破產、親屬離散、甚至家破人亡的困難境地！並且對社會生產力有巨大的破壞性，還擾亂社會治安，帶給人們巨大的威脅，毒品活動造成環境惡化，並逐年縮小了人類的生存空間。
