節氣為節日的產生提供了前題條件，大部分節日在先秦時期，就已初露端倪， 但是其中風俗內容的豐富與流行，還需要有一個漫長的發展過程。最早的風俗活動是和原始崇拜、迷信禁忌有關；神話傳奇故事為節日平添了幾分浪漫色彩；還有宗教對節日的沖擊與影響；一些歷史人物被賦予永恆的紀念滲入節日，所有這些，都融合凝聚節日的內容里，使中國的節日有了深沉的歷史感。
到漢代，我國主要的傳統節日都已經定型，人們常說這些節日起源於漢代，漢代是中國統一後第一個大發展時期，政治經濟穩定，科學文化有了很大發展，這對節日的最後形成提供了良好的社會條件。
節日發展到唐代，已經從原始祭拜、禁忌神秘的氣氛中解放出來，轉為娛樂禮儀型，成為真正的佳節良辰。從此，節日變得歡快喜慶，豐富多采，許多體育、享樂的活動內容出現，並很快成為一種時尚流行開來，這些風俗一直延續發展，經久不衰。
