There once was a master who went to india. in those times, we didn't have the communications or airplanes or many kinds of transportation that we do now. so the master went to india on foot. he had never been to india before; perhaps he came from persia. and when he got there, he saw a lot of fruit. in india they have plenty of fruit to sell, but much of it is expensive because they can't grow much e to the water situation. so he saw one basket, a big basket of some very red, long fruit. and it was the cheapest in the shop, not expensive at all.
So he went up and asked, "how much per kilo?" and the shopkeeper said, "two rupees." two rupees in india is nothing; it's like dirt. so he bought a whole kilogram of the fruit and started eating it. but after he ate some of it: oh, my god! his eyes watered, his mouth watered and burned, his eyes were burning, his head was burning and his face became red. as he coughed and choked and gasped for breath, he jumped up and down, saying, "ah! ah! ah!"
But he still continued to eat the fruit! some people who were looking at him shook their heads and said, "you're crazy, man. those are chilies! you can't eat so many; they're not good for you! people use them as a condiment, but only a little bit to put into food for taste. you can't just eat them by the handful like that; they're not fruit!" so the stupid master said, "no, i can't stop! i paid money for them, and now i'll eat them. it's my money!"
And you think that master was stupid, right? similarly, we sometimes do a lot of things like that. we invest money, time or effort in a relationship, business or job. and even though it's been a long time, bitter experience tells us it won't work, and we know there's no more hope that things will change in the future - this we definitely know by intuition - we still continue just because we've invested money, time, effort and love into it. if so, we're kaput in the brain. just like the man who ate the chilies and suffered so much but couldn't stop because he didn
Learning to Let Go
Perhaps the hardest thing in life is learning to let go. People are filled with desires to earn the best of the best, when ultimately, when they think back, they could have gained much more by learning to give up at the right moment. Learning to let go is relieving your unwanted stress and responsibility. This quality itself is a form of bravery that many could not acquire.
Have you ever looked at people in the morning, while strolling down the streets? You could easily see the expression everyone held – depressed, stressed out, and definitely unhappy. Every morning at seven o』clock, people have frowns and scowls plastered on their face. How terrible is that? The knowledge to clearing that unhappiness is the skill of simply letting go. All humans are gripped by the thought that they could do even better than they already are doing, they could earn even more than they already possess, and they could make tomorrow better, by improving on what they have done.
The fact is, tomorrow morning, when they wake up, they are no happier or less stressful than they are today. The money they want and the materialistic desires they have ultimately pull them down, such that they do not possess the one thing they should have wanted the most, which is psychological comfort and satisfaction.
Learning to let go is not to attempt all that squeezing and pushing you are applying to yourself. When you are tired, strained and tense, stop working and have a cup of tea. When you find yourself being forced to work before deadlines that seem virtually impossible, tell your employer. Of course, there might be a chance your employer would not be pleased, because you could not meet deadlines, but at least you took the chance to free yourself from some unwanted stress that perhaps would have made you end up at the hospital.
Besides, learning to let go is not that hard a skill to acquire. If you have been through tests or examinations, and that you have come across an ultra difficult question, which you eventually decided to skip and work on the next one, then congratulations! You have learnt to let go – the only thing hard about this, is that you have got to apply this knowledge to the rest of your life. Learn to let go, and your troubles will be less.
