有意思的是，在對外報道中，中國夢一致英譯為China dream，而不是Chinese dream。為什麼「美國夢」是American
dream，而「中國夢」卻另起爐灶，譯成China dream呢？這得從歷史上Chinese構成的短語多含貶義說起。
邵志洪的《英漢語研究與對比》（華東理工大學出版社，1997年版，第128頁）中提到：

Flexner指出：「第二次世界大戰時，英國軍隊里出現了一些表達方法，用Chinese指disorganization, noise and
confusion（無組織，喧囂，混亂），比如：a Chinese attack（中國式進攻）是a noisy, badly executed

attack（喧囂、混亂的進攻）；a Chinese landing（中國式降落）是a plane crash（飛機墜毀）；the Chinese
national anthem（中國國歌）是any loud explosion, especially of a bomb or shell not
close enough to be taken
seriously（響亮的爆炸聲，尤指遠離目標的炮彈或炸彈）。為什麼Chinese會帶上『混亂』、『可笑的失敗』這類含義？可能是英國士兵不了解中國人，認為中國人的語言和做事方式奇怪、難以捉摸。」
針對Chinese的貶義色彩，邵志洪還援引Warren H. Goodman的說法給出了另外一種解釋：
美國人普遍認為倘若在地上挖一個洞，筆直挖下去，可以到達中國。由於這種認識，使Chinese帶上了opposite的含義。任何無組織的活動都叫Chinese
fire drill，不是因為中國人無組織，只是表示與fire drill所應有的組織和秩序相反。
可見，Chinese一詞的貶義並非空穴來風，而是受到歷史、社會和地理諸多因素的影響。
著名美語研究專家高克毅（作品多以筆名喬志高行世）在《最新通俗美語詞典》（北京大學出版社，2006年版，第111頁）中也持此說：
不幸，基於百多年來華人在美國的負面形象，以形容詞「中國」起首的美語多半不怎麼好聽。所幸的是，這些詞語現在僅偶爾出現，而且並非故意針對中國人或中華民族。
因此，從詞源學的角度考慮，把「中國夢」譯成China dream而不是Chinese dream是有其自身道理的。
難逃厄運、被打入另冊的還有Chinese whisper（中國式耳語，在傳播過程中逐漸走樣的消息），Chinese home
run（中國本壘打，不合規范的小場地容易打出的低級全壘打）等。這里選取其中的Chinese gooseberry，Chinese restaurant
syndrome以及另一個和中國相關的not a Chinaman』s chance三個短語為例，帶我們走近中西方相遇時一段段塵封的往事。
1. not a Chinaman』s chance
相傳19 世紀中葉, 美國加利福尼亞發現黃金, 白人淘金所剩下來的渣滓無人過問了,
才輪到當地華工去拚命淘濾。他們發財的機會微乎其微，差不多等於沒有。英語中把「渺茫的機會」（slight chance）叫做「支那人的機會」。
有趣的是，not a Chinaman』s
chance的來源還有另外一種說法。19世紀20年代英國報紙有關拳擊比賽的報道中，把挨不起揍的人稱為「瓷人兒」（chinaman）。後來以訛傳訛，c變成大寫，就成了中國人（Chinaman）。（喬志高，《吐露集》，台灣時報出版公司，1981年，第370～371頁）從這個層面上，a
Chinaman』s chance同樣表示「勝算極小」。
錢歌川的《英文疑難詳解》和喬志高的《言猶在耳》都提到抗戰期間林語堂接受美國記者提問時的一句經典：
Japan hasn』t got a Chinaman』s chance of winning this war.
這句話可以依據成語not a Chinaman』s chance翻譯成「日本無獲勝希望」，同時又可按字面理解為「日本勝利的機會遠不及中國」。利用Chinaman，一語雙關。幽默大師，果然不同凡響。
2. Chinese gooseberry
眾所周知，Chinese gooseberry和kiwi fruit都表示「獼猴桃」，可兩者之間的關系及由來一直語焉不詳，各種大型詞典也沒有在詞源說明中指出它們之間的聯系。20th Century Words（《二十世紀新詞語詞典》）對Chinese
gooseberry與kiwi fruit的釋義倒是揭開了兩者之間的淵源：
Chinese gooseberry n. (1922) the fruit of the vine Actinia chinesis, later
better known as the kiwi fruit (1966). China was its original home.
中國獼猴桃，一種有蔓植物的果實，後多被稱為「奇異果」，產自中國。（筆者譯）
既然已經承認了中國是Chinese
gooseberry（中國獼猴桃）的原產地，為什麼到了60年代，它的英文名稱就去掉了表明該水果產地的限定詞Chinese，搖身一變，成了kiwi
fruit呢？讓我們再來看看該詞典對kiwi fruit的釋義：
kiwi fruit n. (1966) the oval edible fruit of climbing plant, ... Its
original name was Chinese gooseberry, but when New Zealand growers tried to
export it to the US in the 1960s this was found not to be acceptable for
political reasons, so a new name, appropriate to one of New Zealand』s most
high-profile procts, was chosen.

3. Chinese restaurant syndrome
這個名詞在20世紀60年代的美國非常流行。美國人在唐人街中餐館用餐後，對味精比較敏感，出現頭暈、頭痛、口乾、冒汗、惡心、呼吸困難等不良反應，這類症狀稱為Chinese
restaurant syndrome。美國實驗生物學學會聯合會（FASEB，Federation of American Societies for
Experimental Biology）指出，「中國餐館綜合征」帶貶義且不夠准確（pejorative and inaccurate），建議更改為「MSG
(Monosodium Glutamate) Symptom Complex」（味精綜合征）。
飲食習慣的差異讓「中國餐館」背負上了這個惡名，令人唏噓不已。
