風箏，古時稱為「鷂」，北方謂「鳶」。大多數的人認為風箏起源於中國，而後廣傳於全世界，是一種傳統的民間工藝品。實際上，中國最早出現的風箏是用木材作的。春秋戰國時，東周哲人墨翟（公元前478-392年），曾「費時三年，以木製木鳶，飛升天空……」。墨子在魯山（今山東濰坊境內），「斫木為鷂，三年而成，飛一日而敗」。這是說墨子研究試制了三年，終於用木板製成了一隻木鳥，但只飛了一天就壞了。墨子製造的這只木鷂是最早的風箏，也是世界上最早的風箏。（約公元前300年），距今已有二千四百年。
直至東漢期間，蔡倫發明造紙術後，坊間才開始以紙做風箏，稱為「紙鳶」。因此可以推斷，中國風箏已有兩千年以上歷史了。
墨子把制風箏的事業傳給了他的學生公輸班（也稱魯班），《墨子·魯問篇》中說，魯班根據墨翟的理想和設計，用竹子做風箏。魯班把竹子劈開削光滑，用火烤彎曲，做成了喜鵲的樣子，稱為「木鵲」，在空中飛翔達三天之久。《書》上說：「公輸班制木鳶以窺宋城」。

在正史中也有關於風箏的記載，時間較五代更早，其一是南朝的「侯景之亂」，梁武帝被侯景圍困，城牆被包圍。曾放風箏向外求援，據南史卷八十《侯景傳》中所述，在梁武帝蕭衍大清三年（公元549年）時，侯景作亂，叛軍將武帝圍困於梁都建鄴（即今南京），內外斷絕，有人獻計製作紙鴉，把皇帝詔令系在其中，當時太子簡文在太極殿外，乘西北風施放向外求援，不幸被叛軍發覺射落，不久台城即遭攻陷，梁朝從此也衰微滅亡。這是簡文施放風箏向外求救不幸失敗的故事。
相傳在公元前五世紀時，希臘的阿爾克達斯就發明了風箏，可惜後來失傳。直到公元十三世紀，義大利人馬可波羅從中國返回歐洲後，風箏才開始在西方傳播開來。
又從其它考據證實，約第十世紀傳至韓國再至日本，十三、四世紀才傳至歐洲。
美國也有放風箏的故事，當時的人們以為雷電與閃光，是宗教上神的怒吼而生恐懼，富蘭克林則利用風箏，證明了雷電與閃光是空中放電的現象，而發明了避雷針。
