The history of the English language really started with the arrival of three Germanic tribes who invaded Britain ring the 5th century AD.These tribes,the Angles,the Saxons and the Jutes,crossed the North Sea from what today is Denmark and northern Germany.At that time the inhabitants of Britain spoke a Celtic language.But most of the Celtic speakers were pushed west and north by the invaders - mainly into what is now Wales,Scotland and Ireland.The Angles came from Englaland and their language was called Englisc - from which the words England and English are derived.

英語發展史可以追溯到公元前500年左右。在大不列顛島(Great Britain)上史料記載的最早的語言是公元前500年左右的凱爾特語(Celtic)。公元前55年，羅馬人入侵大不列顛，並一直佔領了大約500多年，拉丁語進入了該地區，並成為官方語言，凱爾特語的地位下降。約公元449年，居住於丹麥與德國北部的3個日耳曼人部族趁羅馬帝國衰落入侵到大不列顛島上。他們分別是盎格魯人（Angles，入侵日德蘭半島中部）、薩克遜人（Saxons，入侵日德蘭半島南部）和朱特人（Jutes，入侵日德蘭半島北部）。在語言上，他們取代了當時該地所使用的凱爾特語。這三個日耳曼部族方言隨著社會發展，逐漸融合為一種新的語言，即盎格魯一薩克遜語（Anglo-Saxon），這就是後來形成的英語的基礎。到公元700年，人們把大不列顛島上三部族混合形成的語言稱為Englisc。到公元1000年，島上整個國家被稱作Englaland。這兩個詞後來就演變成English（英語）和England（英格蘭或英國）這就是English和England兩個詞的歷史由來。

在「文藝復興」時期（14世紀-16世紀），由於人們對古希臘、古羅馬文化表現出濃厚的研究興趣，英語又吸收了大量古代社會及當時歐洲大陸文化精華，詞彙大增。例如來自希臘語的geometry，astronomy，botany；法語的comrade，alloy，surpass；西班牙語的banana，cocoa，mosquito；義大利語的violin，piazza。

18世紀後，英國的工業革命興起，對殖民地的爭奪使英語隨著帝國的發展走向世界。因此，在與各地交往中吸收大量新詞彙。如來自非洲的zebra，chim-pazee；來自印度的cashmere，shampoo；來自漢語的tea，litchi；來自澳大利亞的kangaroo，boomerang；來自西印度群島的cannibal，canoe。由於英國殖民地的發展與向海外的大量移民，英語亦從其本土向國外傳播（例如BBC英語廣播電台）。

目前在英國以外，把英語作為第一語言（即母語，Native language)的國家有愛爾蘭(Ireland)、美國(America)、澳大利亞(Australia)、紐西蘭(New Zealand)、蓋亞那(Guyana)、巴哈馬(The Bahamas)、巴貝多(Barbados)、百慕大(Bermuda)、牙買加(Jamaica)、聖克里斯多福及尼維斯(Saint Christopher and Nevis)、特立尼達和多巴哥(Trinidad and Tobago)，在加拿大(Canada)大部分人說英語；把英語作為官方語言的國家有奈及利亞、迦納、肯亞、烏干達、坦尚尼亞、尚比亞、辛巴威、南非、新加坡、印度、菲律賓等國；作為第二語言的有丹麥、芬蘭、瑞典、挪威、冰島等國。英語逐漸發展成為一種世界語言，在外交上的地位也取代了法語，成為今天世界政治、經濟、科技、文化交流最重要的語言。雖然以英語為母語的國家有前面列舉的好幾個，但我們還是推薦找外教以美國、加拿大、英國為主。

英語也存在著地域性差異。在英國本土，由於原來由日德蘭半島來到大不列顛島的盎格魯人、薩克遜人、朱特人分別定居於不同地點，這就使英語的發展在起始時期就出現地域差別。隨著工業與城市的發展，倫敦不僅成為全國最大的城市，而且也吸收了國內各方言區來的居民，各種方言相互融合，以倫敦地區作為全國文化中心的牛津和劍橋所用的語言便成為英國的標准語，再通過廣播和電視向全國及國外傳播，使國內語言及海外英語逐漸統一。

在英國本土以外，通過移民與政治等作用，英語的分布范圍逐漸擴大。同時，由於空間上與本土距離較遠以及接受地的客觀原因而出現英語的國外方言，主要有美國英語、澳大利亞英語、南非英語和印度英語等。其中，美國英語是英語在英國本土外使用最廣，也是最重要的英語方言。從總體上來講，目前美國英語在中國也最為流行。

17世紀時，英國移民開始在北美洲（現美國的東海岸）進行殖民活動。後來，移民人數增多，遂於沿海建立了13個殖民地。這13個殖民地經過獨立運動，後建立了美國，並成為美國最初的13州。它們脫離了與英國的從屬關系，所以當時移民所講的英語就成為美國的語言。

由於美國與英國中間有大西洋相隔，兩邊人員來往、語言交流受到影響，兩地的英語逐漸產生差異。美國英語方言主要分新英格蘭、大西洋沿岸中部和南方三種。新英格蘭方言區是以馬薩諸塞州為中心的美國東北地區。該地居民都是英格蘭人移民，三分之二來自東安利亞的清教徒，少數來自英格蘭北部，是比較純的英格蘭英語。大西洋沿岸中部方言區以賓夕法尼亞州為中心，早期該地是來自英格蘭北部的移民，後來則多為來自蘇格蘭、愛爾蘭的移民，除定居賓夕法尼亞州外，還波及新澤西州和特拉華州。後來進入的移民還有荷蘭人、德國人、瑞典人。

南方方言區以弗吉尼亞州為最早的核心區。移民來自英格蘭，其中約一半來自英格蘭的西南部。後來，隨著美國在越過阿巴拉契亞山脈向西發展過程中，三個方言區的進展各有不同。新英格蘭方言除圍繞大湖南岸外，還出現以西雅圖、舊金山和鹽湖城為中心的三個語言島。大西洋沿岸中部方言向西進入俄亥俄州等地，直達南、北國境線，成為美國最大方言區。
