網路的全方位、超時空、互動性和隱蔽性為中學生的社會交往提供了更為廣泛的機會。學生可以利用快捷的電子郵件與他人進行遠距離交流，這種「戴面具」的交往方式可使中學生在平等、寬松的社交環境中盡情展現自我。調查顯示，53%的人上網是為了向外發布信息。
但調查也發現，網路同其他事物一樣，除了有利的一面，也給一些中學生帶來困擾，如網路容易使少數自控力較差的中學生上癮、間接和符號化的交往形式在一定程度上削弱了同他人面對面的交往機會和願望、網路高技術容易使有的中學生對網路技術產生過度崇拜等。
調查認為，網際網路的發展使對中學生的教育工作呈現新的特點，學校教育應該是網上育人與網下育人相結合，以促進中學生整體素質的提高。
