材料是一首短詩，共四句，短小精悍，寓意淺顯明了，詩歌中的物象是鏡子。說得是鏡子，一輩子只照別人，就是沒有照見自己，直到有一天，偶遇另一面鏡子，才看見了自己的真面目。
首先，通過關鍵語句，把握材料的感情傾向。
「照了一輩子人」「沒有照見自己」「看見自己的真面目」單看前兩個短語，似乎還有贊鏡子無私奉獻之意，如紅燭如春蠶，但後一句最關鍵，定基調，結合三句，詩歌意在批評鏡子只能鑒人，不能鑒己;只能明察秋毫別人的得失，卻看不到自己的廬山真面;只能知人，不能知己。
另外，還有關聯詞，「就是」「才」也可以作為佐證。表明詩歌的感情基調是深深的惋惜，是淺淺的責備，是淡淡的批評。由物及人，詩歌意在告誡我們:不但要知彼，更要知己。要認清自己，不但要知人，更要察己，不但要全面准確地了解別人，更要客觀公正地評價自己。要為自己准備一面「鏡子」。
這也是作文的立意，當然還可以化大為小，從如何認清自己入手，如材料找另一面鏡子，論述「以人為鏡，看清自己」。這里的人，可以指大眾，可以指領袖精英榜樣。可以從大眾身上看到人類的劣根性，人性的醜陋，從而反省自己醜陋的一面;也可以以領袖、榜樣楷模為高標，感知差距，尋找自身的不足，對自己有一個准確的定位，具體說，「以人為鏡」中的人，可以指是與自己密切相關的諍友、知音、愛人、師長、同事、鄰里，也可以是素昧平生，萍水相逢之人，甚至可以是對手。
