本課的重點是反映外祖父對祖國的思念之情。寫愛梅花，是因為梅花是中華民族民族精神的象徵，在外祖父的心目中，梅花就是祖國的代表，愛梅花和愛祖國是統一的。因此，課文中寫的五件事，有的直接寫外祖父對祖國的懷念之情，如，教小外孫女讀唐詩宋詞而且讀著讀著就流出眼淚，因不能回國而難過得大哭起來；有的卻是通過寫愛梅花而間接反映外祖父的愛國心的，如，對一幅墨梅圖的珍愛，在離別前把墨梅圖送給外孫女，在快要開船時把綉著梅花的手絹給了外孫女。
對小學生來講，本課的難點較多。主要有以下幾點。
一是第二自然段中外祖父讀的一些古詩詞。「獨在異鄉為異客，每逢佳節倍思親」是唐代詩人王維的詩《九月九日憶山東兄弟》中的詩句，意思是：一個人獨自在他鄉作客，每逢過節的時候格外思念故鄉的親人。「春草明年綠，王孫歸不歸」是王維《山中送別》中的詩句，意思是：明年春天綠草如茵的時候，您能回來嗎？（「王孫」是古代對人的尊稱）「自在飛花輕似夢，無邊絲雨細如愁」是北宋詩人秦觀的詞《浣溪沙》中的句子，意思是：在空中隨風飄飛的落花，輕飄飄的，好像夜裡的夢；滿天無邊無際落著的雨絲，千條萬縷，就和這心裡郁積的愁一樣多。
二是外祖父贊美梅花的一段話。這段話講了三層意思：第一層是贊揚梅花那種不怕嚴寒、不怕「風欺雪壓」的品格；第二層是說我們中華民族具有梅花那種「頂天立地，不肯低頭折節」的精神；第三層是對外孫女的勉勵，希望她學習梅花的品格。
三是課題。《梅花魂》中的魂，在這里指精神。梅花魂，即梅花的精神。梅花的精神就是那種「不管歷盡多少磨難，受到怎樣的欺凌，從來都是頂天立地，不肯低頭折節」的精神，這也正是中華民族的民族精神。
