本课的重点是反映外祖父对祖国的思念之情。写爱梅花，是因为梅花是中华民族民族精神的象征，在外祖父的心目中，梅花就是祖国的代表，爱梅花和爱祖国是统一的。因此，课文中写的五件事，有的直接写外祖父对祖国的怀念之情，如，教小外孙女读唐诗宋词而且读着读着就流出眼泪，因不能回国而难过得大哭起来；有的却是通过写爱梅花而间接反映外祖父的爱国心的，如，对一幅墨梅图的珍爱，在离别前把墨梅图送给外孙女，在快要开船时把绣着梅花的手绢给了外孙女。
对小学生来讲，本课的难点较多。主要有以下几点。
一是第二自然段中外祖父读的一些古诗词。“独在异乡为异客，每逢佳节倍思亲”是唐代诗人王维的诗《九月九日忆山东兄弟》中的诗句，意思是：一个人独自在他乡作客，每逢过节的时候格外思念故乡的亲人。“春草明年绿，王孙归不归”是王维《山中送别》中的诗句，意思是：明年春天绿草如茵的时候，您能回来吗？（“王孙”是古代对人的尊称）“自在飞花轻似梦，无边丝雨细如愁”是北宋诗人秦观的词《浣溪沙》中的句子，意思是：在空中随风飘飞的落花，轻飘飘的，好像夜里的梦；满天无边无际落着的雨丝，千条万缕，就和这心里郁积的愁一样多。
二是外祖父赞美梅花的一段话。这段话讲了三层意思：第一层是赞扬梅花那种不怕严寒、不怕“风欺雪压”的品格；第二层是说我们中华民族具有梅花那种“顶天立地，不肯低头折节”的精神；第三层是对外孙女的勉励，希望她学习梅花的品格。
三是课题。《梅花魂》中的魂，在这里指精神。梅花魂，即梅花的精神。梅花的精神就是那种“不管历尽多少磨难，受到怎样的欺凌，从来都是顶天立地，不肯低头折节”的精神，这也正是中华民族的民族精神。
